Seeing Levees Saves Lives
There is a crucial and urgent need for RD 1000 – your flood protection district – to be able to visually inspect the levees along the Garden Highway. We must be able to perform inspections on more than 42 miles of levees for damage from District vehicles any time of the day or night during a major storm event.
Levee Visibility Requirements
The inspection of our levees can mean the difference between reacting to a disastrous flood or preventing one in the Natomas Basin.
Read more about the requirements here.
High Stakes
Levee visibility is an essential component of protecting life and property from flood risk. The stakes are enormously high.
Possible Impact to You: Landscape Removal
As part of a lengthy review known as the System-Wide Improvement Framework (SWIF), RD1000 had identified an estimated 100 non-compliant properties on the Garden Highway where vegetation is obstructing our view and needs to be cleaned up so District staff can effectively monitor the part of the levee that protects your family and our community.
To learn more and find out if your property is non-compliant, please email us at swif@rd1000.org.
- This is a state-mandated action that will impact your property.
- Fortunately, most of the issues are related to vegetation, namely overgrown bushes, trees, and shrubs that block our view and access to the levees.
- Overgrown trees and shrubs endanger everyone in our community when they interfere with RD 1000’s ability to perform levee inspections.
- While we recognize you may have concerns related to cost and impact on your property, RD1000 has taken steps to secure a grant to arrange for the work to be done at no cost to you.
- This presents a unique opportunity to take advantage of government funding to bring your property into compliance. It also will save a significant amount of money you would otherwise have to pay on your own.
